Art of ordered calm

Michael Garaway (b.1957, Bristol) studied at Manchester Polytechnic (1977-1980) and University College Chester (1997-1999). Since 2000 he has lived and worked in Reading, Berkshire, UK. He has exhibited widely in the UK, including Art and Computers (Cleveland Gallery 1988), the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition (Bankside Gallery, London 2014), The Discerning Eye (Mall Galleries, London 2017), Biscuits and Bricks (Turbine House Gallery, Reading 2022) and Sense of Space (South Hill Park, Bracknell 2022).

Focussing on small scale paintings as well as occasional digital and sculptural outcomes, Michael Garaway’s practice offers a discerning and ordered response to contemporary landscape and technologies. His work of recent years features graphically controlled use of watercolour, acrylic and drawing media. With this he aims to transform the perception of mundane locations into highly structured outcomes, using a sensitive and precise handling of composition and colour.
