Statement which accompanied the work in the exhibition:

Michael Garaway combines observations of the built environment with geometrical drawing and design processes, to develop quiet and contemplative interpretations of places and spaces.

A momentary impression from his former academic life, of a quiet university campus corridor between semesters, led to a perspective based project being tentatively started in 2019, which was given impetus towards completion by this Sense of Space exhibition.

The outcome intentionally speaks of that which is corporate and institutional, a space of contemporary and secular monoculture, which seems to conceal or deny indications of creative faculty or spirit.

The depiction of a long corridor implies access to a distant goal without deviation, yet it is constrained by its own structure, embodying a claustrophobic conformity.

The project included explorations of different ways to achieve the desired perspective, including the construction of a 3D model to be photographed, which itself was further developed as a sculptural object.

Exhibitors provided audio descriptions for their work in collaboration with Emma Major.
